DevOps System Administrators - Linux (Boston / London)
| 23/11/2011We are looking for experienced DevOps Systems Administrators to join our Infrastructure team, to be based in Boston, MA, or in our London UK office. These are real DevOps hands-on roles combining Linux systems administration, network management and database administration.
The roles will suit those with a multidisciplinary skill set who are comfortable with infrastructure and configuration, but also happy to roll up their sleeves, write tests, debug, and ship features.
You will be working in an agile environment, collaborating with Development and other DevOps Systems Administrators to enhance, support and maintain the systems which run our SaaS (Software as a Service) applications (TIM Ideas and TIM Funds).
This will require a combination of research and development of new secure systems, upgrade of current Linux systems, networks, and associated hardware and software, and maintenance / support activities.
For example a good understanding of database internals will allow you to tune performance on any DBMS.
This role will make the most of your solid knowledge and experience across the full stack of data centre and application technologies including: Linux (Ubuntu), Apache, MySQL, MongoDB, Postfix, iptables, IPVS load balancing, VRRP, collectd, keepalived, conntrackd, hardware (particularly HP), scripting, Nagios, Graphite, KVM/LXC virtualisation, JMX, and IP networking (layer 2/3 switching/routing, policy based routing, etc). Our daily toolkit includes Ruby, Puppet, MCollective, git, and Jenkins.
This is not a position for pointy-clicky system administrators. You must be willing to pick up and learn anything as needed to get the job done and have sufficient confidence in you technical abilities and force of character to drive new solutions through.
We'd expect you to churn out LINUX scripts, automating jobs and generally improving productivity.
This is a small team and your ability to flexibly collaborate, to sometimes lead and sometimes follow, will be appreciated.
We are continuing to build this infrastructure team to have a modern and interesting environment, for example: one-click server setup, freedom to guide tools/techniques/process, and bridging the gap between the developers and operations.
You are also likely to spend time as a member of one of our product development teams: attending feature planning sessions, bringing requirements back to the Infrastructure team, participating in root-cause analysis and iteration retrospectives.
Essential Attributes / Skills:
- Excellent debugging skills
- Experience with using Puppet for configuration management and systems provisioning
- Installation, management and support of Java environments (Apache/modjk, Tomcat, etc)
- Experience with working in the data centres – racking, cabling, etc
- Experience implementing Disaster Recovery and High Availability
- Demonstrable commercial and practical experience in management of Linux operating systems
- Excellent communication and inter-personal skills
- Ability to find and use new technologies to enhance our products
Ideal Attributes:
- Experience doing application development and testing in jvm languages (Java, Scala, etc)
- Experience with MCollective
- You've fixed bugs in open-source system administration tools
